Welcome to my portfolio!

My name is Max Schmid, & I am a systems designer, programmer, & technical artist.

Ever since I was 11 years old, I had an interest in game development. I spent my free time making games using Scratch, but would eventually move on to trying out Unreal Engine, Unity, Blender, & so on.

I've always wanted to provide players with emergent experiences that let them express & challenge themselves in creative & unique ways. I've always been systems forward with my designs, creating games that allow for a lot of player freedom, be that through sandbox design, perk/skill building, or allowing for a variety of playstyles.

In my spare time, I often work on my own personal projects. I'm currently making Lost RETROGRADE, a solo project that allows me to learn & evolve my skills in enemy AI programming, sandbox game design, narrative writing, & 3D character art. I also enjoy playing video games (of course).

My Favorite Games

I find myself very inspired by my favorite games. I enjoy games with strong ludo narrative harmony using thematic & innovative (for better or worse) game mechanics. I also enjoy games with a lot of depth of knowledge.

I love discovering niche strategies or game mechanics that make me view the experience in an entirely new way. You can definitely see influences from all of these games in my own work.
